ITE UIUC Student Chapter went on a tour of Willard Airport, owned by the University of Illinois and home to the aviation program at Parkland College. Participants in groups of 14 were taken on a bus tour of airfield facilities, including the runway and taxiways. An on the fly tutorial about reading airfield pavement markings was followed by a display of how some of the planes took off and landed, and how the Air Traffic Control managed the entire operation.
The tour also included a behind-the-scenes view of the baggage distribution system and the local fire station (which had some very expensive equipment indeed). ITE would like to thank the staff and administration at Willard Airport for taking their time to educate us about this valuable component of our community.
